Swedish journalist Dawit Isaak has soon been detained for 5,000 days.

Now urges MEP Lars Adaktusson KD, EU to increase pressure on the Eritrean regime.

– It is silence that the regime wants to see in this case – because it is very important that we recall the terrible things that happened Dawit says Lars Adaktusson.

When Parliament debated the Union’s development aid to Eritrea on Wednesday evening took Lars Adaktusson also to remind the Swede imprisoned Dawit Isaak – and that on Tuesday of next week has been 5,000 days since he was arrested and imprisoned in Asmara.

– I think it has been a period of relative silence, both media and political, and I think it is important to keep up the pressure on the Eritrean regime in this important case, and this is a good time, says Lars Adaktusson.

Open letter

He has also written an open letter to the EU’s two top executives, Jean-Claude Juncker and Federika Mogherini where he makes a wish for the EU to increase the pressure on Eritrea.

The letter went on Wednesday to all Swedish MEP with the hope that everyone signs.

– I have received very positive reactions so far, so I have every reason to believe that there will be broad support, says Lars Adaktusson.

He wants the EU to focus its diplomatic and economic sanctions against the Eritrean government representatives, prevent Eritrean embassies in the EU can enforce the illegal collection of taxes that exist today and sharpness counterclaims that the country follows the human rights to receive assistance.

”I hope the regime will soon be gone”

The letter should be handed over to Mr Juncker and Mogherini on Tuesday June 2nd.

– The concrete proposals which, I emphasize, I think are requirements that we need to operate from the Swedish side but also from Europe, says Lars Adaktusson.

He has been involved in the case of Dawit Isaak, for many years, and did during his time as a journalist for a trip to Eritrea, where he interviewed the country’s president Isaias Afwerki. After that he is not welcome back to the country.

– I sincerely hope that this regime will soon be gone, it would be the best thing that could happen for the Eritrean population.

Eritrea is one of the world’s harshest dictatorships and all power is concentrated in the President Isaias Afwerki and his party PFDJ.

Several thousand prisoners of conscience are calculated in prison in Eritrea without trial and under poor conditions.

Dawit Isaak is, according to Amnesty International the only Swedish prisoner of conscience. He was arrested 23 September 2001.

Of the Eritrean refugees in Europe, 30-year-old Yohannes Hadgu Girmay is a step ahead. He can run 10 km in 29.03 minutes. He was born to run but was forced by his country into the military and jailed for being an evangelist. On his release, he had the chance of a lifetime: to leave for a race in Europe. It was his passport to freedom.

I met him, with his coach Giorgio Rondelli, in a bar on the outskirts of Milan. He was wearing the Italian national football shirt and sports sunglasses. His tall, elegant figure is almost regal. When he takes off the glasses, you can see there’s no shadow of desperation in his eyes, just determination.

We begin to talk in a hybrid language, a mix of Italian and English, on an afternoon with pollen coming down like snow.

How long have you been in Italy?

For more than seven months, I arrived on 20 October 2014.

How did you get here?

By air, legally, with Eritrean documents to participate in a race in the Netherlands as an Eritrean athlete. But, after the event, I chose not to return home and I sought asylum. Not in the Netherlands, but in Italy. Now, however, I live in a limbo. I’m classed as an ‘article 15′: that is, I’m waiting for the hearing of my request for political asylum, which I filed in October. Then, if all goes well, I will be able to apply for a residence permit.

Why did you decide to apply for asylum in Italy?

In Milan I have Eritrean friends who I knew would give me a hand. And they have.

Did you leave family or friends behind in Eritrea?

My girlfriend and my parents. I miss them all. I wish my girlfriend could join me. I’m doing well here and there are some very interesting possibilities for my work. For the first six months I didn’t race. Then I met Giorgio Rondelli, my coach, and we now have a great relationship.

No one knew you were an athlete?

No, I didn’t tell anyone at first. Then, by talking to people I trusted, it came out and I started training with Giorgio. I regained my passion and desire to run and now it’s even stronger than before.

Do you have problems living here?

I still haven’t got official documents. They are waiting for the official status of political refugee. I’ve got room and board at a reception centre in Milan. Thanks to them I’ve got a visa in my pocket, so I can move freely around the city. The waiting-times are long and the process is complicated, but luckily I’m not alone. I have a strong reason to stay here: to run and win. I have found good people who are supporting me and I’m learning Italian.

So you need official documents to participate in an official competition?

Yes. I have to be a member of an official federation and for that I need a residence permit.

How do you feel? Are you happy or afraid of the future?

I’m not afraid. I’m determined. In my mind there is only running. I always say: Yohannes: just run! This is my future.

How do you train with Giorgio?

I train every day with a group of runners. In particular, with Marco, an Italian boy and Goran Nava, an Italian-Serb who made the Olympics. There’s a nice atmosphere and we share the same passion.

We say goodbye with a vigorous handshake. He starts his training and I stay for a few minutes to watch. Yohannes starts with three others and after 100 metres, he’s left them behind over a distance that, from where I’m standing, seems endless.

ኣብዚ ዝሓለፈ 24 ዓመታት ሕሱም መልክን ባርነትን ስርዓት ህግደፍ፡ ህዝቢ ኤርትራ እንታʼዩ ረቢሑን ተጠቃማይ ኮይኑን…? ንልዕሊ ክልተ ዓመታት መብራህቲ ሓንሳብ ጠቕሊልካ ብምጥፋእ፡ ንሓንሳብ ብመልክዕ ጥምዮን ስትዮን ስለ ዝዓደልካ፡፡ ዲጋታት ሰሪሕናን ንሰርሕ ኣለናን እናዘመርካ ህዝቢ ብስእነት ማይ፡ ናብ ማይ ዘለዎ ክኸይድ ስለ ዝኣዘዝካ፡፡ እኒ ጸባ፡ መዓር፡ ጠስሚ፡ ስጋ፡ ካልኦት መዓልታዊ ቀረባት ህዝቢ ክሳብ ኣስማቶም ዝርስዖም ካብ ዕዳጋ ከም ዝጠፍእ ስለ ዝገበርካ፡፡ ኣብ ታሪኽ ኤርትራ ሰሚዕናዮ ዘይንፈልጥ፡ ንመዓልቲ ሓንቲ ባኒ ንሓደ ሰብ ስለ ዝኣዘዝካ፡፡ ኣብ ድኳን ሕድሪ ማሸላን ዝተበላሸወ ዘይትን በርበረን ንህዝቢ ፈውሲ ግስም ስለ ዝዓደልካ፡፡ መናእሰያት መሪርዎምን ሓሲምዎምን ኣሽሓት ዶላራት ንጀነራላትን ደቂ ጀነራላትን ከፊሎም፡ ናብ ሱዳንን ኢትዮጵያን ክግዓዙ ረቂቕ ስልቲ ስለ ዝቐመርካ፡፡ ነቲ ዓጠምጠም ዝብል ዝነበረ መሳርዓት ሓይልታት ምክልኻል ኤርትራ፡ በታቲንካን ዘራሪግካን መተካእታ ኤርትራዊ መንእሰይ: ደምሒትን ጉንቦት ሰባትን ኣርበኞችን ስለ ዘዕኮኽካ፡፡ ንኤርትራ ምስ ኩለን ጎረባብታ ኣናኺስካን ኣባኢስካን ናይ ጽልኢ ደሴት ስለ ዝቐየርካያ፡፡ እንዳ ንኺድ ንጽደፍ! ንልቢ ክኾነኩም ካብቲ ብዙሕ ቁንጣሮ እየ ፈይ ፈይ ኣቢለልኩም፡፡ ልምዓት ብጽንዓት ብካርኒቫል ብዳንኬራ…….


24 ግንበት 1991 ኤርትራ ምሉእ ብምሉእ ኣብ ዝተሓረረትሉ፡ ካብ ብ መግዛእቲ ጥልያን ኣትሒዘን ዝሰርሓ ዝነበራ፡ መግዛእቲ እንግሊዝ ይኹን ሃጸይ ሃይለስላሰ ድሒሩ ዝተደምሰሰን ደርጊ፡ ዘይነቐልወንን ዘየዕነውወንን ኣስታት ዕስራ ዝኾና ፋብሪካታት ሎሚ ኣበይ ኣለዋ..? ክልቲኡ ወደባት ኤርትራ ሎሚ ኣብ ከመይ ደረጃ ኢዩ ዘሎ….? ተጠቕሊሉ ሓንቲ ፋብሪካ ባናቶም ተሰሪሑ ዶ ክንብል፡፡ ጉጅለ ህግደፍ ሃገርን ሃገራውነትን ከይተረፈ ከም ዝሽርሸር ገይሩ ኢዩ፡፡ ሎሚ ብሰንኪ ሕሱም ምልክን ባርነትን ጉጅለ ህግደፍ ኣብ ኤርትራዊ ሕብረተሰብ፡ ብፍላይ ድማ ኣብ መናእሰያት ኤርትራ እንታይ ገደሰንን ንዓይ ጥራይ ይጥዓመንን ዝብል ቀታልን ናይ በለጽ ኣተሓሳስባን ብርእዮ ክነግስ ይረኣይ ኣሎ፡፡ ይኽደነና ዘብል ከቢድ ደበና ጥፍኣት ኢዩ ኣብ ልዕሌና ኣንጠጥዩ ዘሎ፡፡ ንለባም ኣምተሉ ንዓሻን ደርጓሓሉ ድዩ ዝበሃል፡ ጉጅለ ህግደፍ ዝተራቐቐን ዝተናወሓን ስልቲ መግዛእቲ እንግሊዝ ተጠቒሙ፡ ክድህከናን ከዕንወናን ጥራይ ዘይኮነ፡ ናብ ሃው ዝበለ ገደል ሸለው ከብለና ምዃኑ ደርጒሑልና ኢዩ፡፡ ይኽደነና!!!
